7 Social Media Mistakes To Avoid

According to Forbes, over 50 million business are currently on Facebook. With that number only projected to grow, you need to be on top of your game when using social media to market your business. It takes effort and attention to detail to compose and deliver content to your audience that proves to be engaging and successful.

Here are seven mistakes you should avoid to maximize your social media impact.

  1. Not responding.

How can you reap the benefits of social media if you’re not being social? Being active in responding to your followers is key in being able to engage both potential and returning customers. It’s the job of a social media manager to engage in a dialog with people who are ultimately prospective buyers. Not engaging them shows a lack of interest in people and potential customers.

  1. Not having a plan.

It’s impossible to have a meaningful social presence without a plan. What will you post? And how will those posts ultimately correlate to a brand message that is clear and captivating, all while maintaining a brand identity? Having a plan allows for well thought out content that engages the viewer and supports the overall brand.

When it comes to having a plan, an editorial calendar is a great place to start. Click here to download our editorial calendar.

  1. Sharing irrelevant content.

Sharing content not related to your brand not only confuses people, it shows a lack of brand identity. If the content is off-message, you run the risk of annoying or even offending your audience. This can lead to a loss of followers and customers, which also translate to a loss of money. Instead, stay on topic.

Publishing relevant content allows you to attract an interested audience. It also creates trust between you and your followers.

  1. Not tracking performance.

With the amount of analytic tools available there is no reason you shouldn’t be paying attention to the performance of your content. Social media platforms provide ways to see who’s looking at and engaging with your posts.

Using analytics also allows you to discover what content performs best. What does your audience like? Tracking performance allows you to refine this content and market directly to your selected target market, focusing on delivering the most relevant message to the most targeted audience.

  1. Infrequent Posting

Let’s face it…It’s hard to get a peoples attention. Especially on platforms where people are subjected to hundreds of messages and advertisements each day.

With that said, it’s not enough to post a few times a month. Consistently posting meaningful messages and content shows an understanding of your industry and a commitment to your business. It also means your message is seen more. As page owners, the more regularly you post, the more likely your content will be seen and found.

Simply put, it pays to post more.

  1. Using wrong size images.

If you’re managing social media it’s your job to catch the eye of viewers. Using the incorrect resolution of images doesn’t do this. In fact, it can show a lack of attention to detail and portray a lack of interest and commitment to the audience. Using hi-res, attention grabbing images will attract the attention of potential followers and customers.

It’s important to remember that your social media profile might be the first interaction a potential customer has with you and your business. What kind of first impression do you want to make?

  1. Not knowing your audience.

How can you market if you don’t know who your marketing to? Knowing your audience means understanding what they’re interested in and what problems you plan to solve with your social media content.

Posts that are catered to your select demographic allows for relevant content to be published. The great part about utilizing analytics is that it allows you to discover information on your audience to see what they do and don’t not respond too.

If you’re using social media in any capacity for a business it’s important to know what works and what doesn’t. Avoiding these seven mistakes on social media will lead to a much more clear and refined message, allowing you to attract and engage more followers and potential customers.
